[Agatha’s POV]
The gown took eleven days. I want to be clear about that—not because it matters now, but because it did matter, enormously, three weeks ago when I started.
The ceremonial gown needed resizing, the silver threading had frayed at the collar, the hem was uneven from last year's rain. All true. None of it the reason I sat up past midnight for eleven consecutive nights with a needle between my fingers.
The reason was this: the Winter Blood Ceremony is the one night a year the Alpha names his Luna before the Goddess and the entire pack. I needed the argument to be airtight. I needed it to be irrefutable.
Hilda is wearing white fur. White fur at the Winter Blood Ceremony means one thing, and the two hundred wolves packed into this clearing all know what it means—which is why not a single one of them is looking at me right now. Because white fur is reserved for new, appointed Lunas only. But I am the Luna. It doesn’t make sense, and yet.
The torches make her hair look like something on fire. She's not trying to be subtle about it: the smile she turns on me from across the clearing is warm, almost apologetic, the kind that says I hope you understand in the same breath it says there is nothing you can do.
I smile back. Old reflex. I have been producing that smile for six months now, on cue, whenever she walked into a room I was already occupying, and it has served me very well.
